Love thy neighbour? Romanian official angered by Hungarian ‘interference’
Romanian Foreign Ministry state secretary George Ciamba has “taken note with surprise” comments by “certain Hungarian officials” at the annual Summer University organised in Transylvania, saying the incident is interference in the “democratic, legitimate and sovereign process of this country”.
By “certain Hungarian officials” Ciamba presumably meant Bence Rétvári, the state secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice, who said that planned administrative-territorial reform by Romania “severely violates the international norms of the European Council and the European Union”. Rétvári noted that the obligatory EU framework forbids member states from territorial actions aimed at changing ratios in ethnic areas and thus reducing certain rights and freedoms.
