Final stretch of Bulgaria’s Sofia-Bourgas Trakiya Motorway ‘to open July 1’

The final stretch of Bulgaria’s Trakiya Motorway, linking capital city Sofia to the Black Sea city of Bourgas via Plovdiv, will be completed by the end of June and ready for use by motorists on July 1 2013, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Regional Development Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva.

Zaharieva, a member of the caretaker cabinet, inspected work on May 26 on the final stretch, the 32km from Yambol to Karnobat. Officially termed “lot 4” of the motorway, its completion will bring the total length of the highway to 360km.

Zaharieva said that the previous problems with a shortage of construction equipment had been solved and three shifts were being worked to complete the motorway in time.

Road Infrastructure Agency head Lazar Lazarov said that in spite of the rapid pace of work in the past month, no compromise on quality was being allowed.
