Borissov government has officially filed resignation – Speaker of Parliament
Prime Minister Boiko Borissov has formally filed the resignation of his government, Speaker of Parliament Tsetska Tsacheva announced in the National Assembly on February 20 2013, about two hours after Borissov told the House that his government was stepping down in the face of days of nationwide protests that turned violent on the night of February 19.
Members of Parliament will vote on the resignation on February 21.
Borissov’s government will serve in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a caretaker cabinet pending the holding of elections. Bulgaria had been due to go to the polls in regular national elections in July 2013.
Borissov’s centre-right party GERB was elected to power in July 2009, defeating the previous government, a socialist-led tripartite coalition.
