Plovdiv building of Bulgaria’s ‘Banitsa Bandit’ searched for missing 1.5M leva
Investigators searched the basement of the apartment building of Bulgaria’s ‘Banitsa Bandit’, Georgi Enev, on July 6 2012 in a quest to find the 1.5 million leva that the security guard – who has turned himself over to police – allegedly stole on June 22.
To the frustration of police and prosecutors in Bulgaria’s second city of Plovdiv, Enev, who disappeared along with the money after asking a colleague to leave the security van they were in to go to buy banitsa, has said nothing about where the money might be.
Enev (33), alleged to have been in serious debt, has been placed in a remand centre in Plovdiv.
Prosecutors said that the fact that he had handed himself over to police would be a mitigating factor in a trial, but a court would likely take a dim view of his current refusal to disclose the whereabouts of the money.
Investigators have yet to establish whether or not Enev had an accomplice.
