Samaras puts brakes on initiative to lift moratorium on home repossessions

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras was quick to end speculation about the government going ahead with a troika-backed controversial initiative to lift a moratorium on home repossessions and auctions.

The Greek PM said the issue is too complex and serious to be discussed at this moment in time and that he plans to “handle it personally”.

Leaks from the Finance Ministry in recent weeks suggested the government was ready to succumb to pressure from Greece’s international lenders, represented by the troika, to lift a ban on home repossessions at the end of 2013; albeit with exemptions for many first-home owners living in poverty or with more than four children.
