In EU, new battery-only electric cars up 30% in 2025

In 2025, 1.89 million new battery-only electric passenger cars were registered in the EU, marking a strong rebound of 29.7 per cent compared with 2024, EU statistics agency Eurost said on July 31

This came after a decline in 2024, when new registrations fell by 6.0 per cent compared with 2023 (1.46 million cars). 

The total number of battery-only electric passenger cars reached 7.59 million in 2025, representing a 31.5 per cent increase compared with the 2024 fleet of 5.77 million.

Plug-in hybrids recorded a growth rate of 34.2 per cent, similar to battery-only electric cars in new registrations compared with 2024, reaching a total of 1.03 million plug-in hybrid new registrations in 2025.

At the same time, new registrations of non-plug-in hybrids grew at less than half the rate (+13.4 per cent); nevertheless, the total number of new registrations of non-plug-in hybrids reached 3.62 million cars, exceeding the number of any other type of new cars.

Meanwhile, registrations of new pure diesel passenger cars fell by 22 per cent (1.07 million), and pure petrol passenger cars observed a comparable decline of 18.4 per cent (2.98 million), Eurostat said.
