Eurostat: Price of fuel in Bulgaria in April 2026 was up 27.8% y/y

The price of fuel in Bulgaria in April 2026 was 27.8 per cent higher than in April 2025, according to European Union statistics agency Eurostat.

This was the fifth-highest increase among EU countries.

In April 2026, the price of fuels and lubricants for personal transport in the EU increased by 20.8 per cent compared with April 2025, following a rise of 12.9 per cent in March 2026 compared with the same month of 2025, Eurostat said.

Up to February 2026, the price of fuels and lubricants in the EU was generally decreasing for both the EU average and most EU countries.

These prices rose in all EU countries in April 2026, and 15 saw increases above 20 per cent. The highest increases were recorded in Luxembourg (+33.8 per cent), France and Sweden (both +29.3 per cent), Latvia (+28.1 per cent) and Bulgaria (+27.8 per cent).

The lowest increases were recorded in Hungary (+1.5 per cent), Poland (+8.8 per cent) and Italy (+12.9 per cent).

Looking at diesel and petrol prices in the EU, in April 2026, they increased by 33.7 per cent for diesel and 13.6 per cent for petrol compared with April 2025. In March 2026, diesel prices rose by 19.8 per cent and petrol by 9.4 per cent. 

On a monthly basis, EU consumers saw diesel prices go up by 7.9 per cent and petrol prices by 2.4 per cent compared with March 2026. In March 2026, diesel rose by 19.1 per cent and petrol by 10.6 per cent relative to February 2025.

Diesel prices went up in all EU countries between March and April 2026. The highest increases were in Slovenia (+23.5 per cent), Bulgaria (+19.5 per cent) and Cyprus (+18.0 per cent), while the lowest were in Poland (+1.9 per cent), Romania (+2.3 per cent) and Bulgaria (+2.6 per cent).

When it comes to petrol prices, 23 EU countries registered increases between March and April 2026 that ranged between 12.9 per cent in Slovenia and 1.3 per cent in Ireland. On the other hand, Romania (-1.2 per cent), Spain (-4.6 per cent) and Poland (- 6.1 per cent) recorded decreases in April compared with the previous month. 

In Bulgaria, according to the fuelo.net website, while the average price of a litre of A95 petrol was 1.25 euro on February 27 (the day before the beginning of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran), as of May 25 it is 1.55 euro.

While the average price of a litre of diesel was 1.29 euro on February 27, as of May 25 it is 1.73 euro, according to the website.
