Spanish Air Force F-18 shoots down drone in Romanian airspace
A Spanish Air Force F-18 fighter jet shot down a drone in Romanian airspace on August 16, Romania’s Ministry of National Defence said in a statement.
The ministry said that at 4.4am on August 16, its surveillance systems detected the entry of an aerial target into national airspace, from the Republic of Moldova, about 24km north of Galați.
A Spanish Air Force F-18 on air policing duty made radar contact with the target and received engagement approval. The drone was safely shot down by the aircraft at 5.01am.
A possible impact point of the drone debris was identified between the localities of Băleni and Cudalbi, Galați County, in an unpopulated area, the ministry said.
The air alert for Galați county ended at 5.20am.
