FDI in Bulgaria in January-September 2025 was 2.53B euro
Foreign direct investment in Bulgaria in the first nine months of the year stood at 2.53 billion euro, the equivalent of 2.3 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP), statistics from the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) showed on November 18.
In the same period of 2024, FDI was 2.1 billion euro, although BNB originally reported 1.24 billion euro, which was revised upward later.
Investment in equity, including in the real estate sector, was 316.7 million euro (compared to 20.5 million euro in January-September 2024) and the BNB figures showed 3.12 billion euro in re-invested earnings (compared to 2.01 billion euro for the first nine months of last year.)
Net receipts from real estate investments by foreign companies recorded a net outflow of 15.9 million euro, compared to a net outflow of 7.1 million euro recorded in January-September 2024.
The central bank data showed 901.3 million euro in investment outflows as debt instruments, recorded as the change in the net liabilities of Bulgarian companies towards their foreign investor owners, compared to an inflow of 61.9 million euro in the first nine months of 2024. Such financial flows include financial loans, suppliers’ credits and debt securities, BNB said.
By country, the largest direct investment in Bulgaria in the first three quarters of 2025 came from the Netherlands (554.9 million euro), Italy (325.2 million euro) and Greece (317.1 million euro). Notable net outflows were recorded towards the United States (-150.5 million euro) and Luxembourg (-76.5 million euro).
According to preliminary figures, Bulgarian investment abroad increased by 402.4 million euro in January-September, compared to 786.1 million euro in the first nine months of last year, BNB said.
