Bulgarian railways offers Christmas steam train rides

For another year, Bulgarian state railways BDZ is organising Christmas train rides with a steam engine to fill young and old railway enthusiasts with festive spirit, BDZ said.

The Christmas trains, pulled by 46.03 Baba Metsa steam engine, will travel on December 14 on the Sofia – Pernik – Sofia route and on December 15 Sofia – Bankya – Sofia.

A Christmas train trip is also planned on December 21 on the Gorna Oryahovitsa – Pleven – Gorna Oryahovitsa route, and details about it will be announced later.

On December 14, the train will depart at 10am from Sofia Central Station for Pernik, passing through the Razmenna, Voluyak and Hrabarsko stations.

On the way back, the train will travel to Sofia via Vladaya and Gorna Banya. Departure from Pernik is at 3.20pm, and arrival in Sofia at 4.47pm.

On December 15, the Christmas train will travel on the Sofia – Bankya – Sofia route. It will depart from Sofia at 9.50am and arrive in Bankya at 10.55am. On the return journey, it departs at 1.25pm and arrives in Sofia at 2pm.

On both days, the train will consist of five carriages for passengers with Christmas decorations and one retro carriage from the Vitosha Express government train, where Father Christmas and Snow White will welcome the children with gifts.

“During the Christmas train’s stay in Pernik and Bankya, everyone will have enough time to look at the BDZ retro train, take a picture with Father Christmas and Snow White, and feel the festive atmosphere in the city itself by visiting the Christmas market in the city centre and enjoying the festive program prepared by the municipality before its departure back to Sofia,” BDZ said.

Tickets for travel in both directions on the Sofia – Pernik – Sofia and Sofia – Bankya – Sofia routes are 55 leva for adults and 27.50 leva for children up to 10 years old with reserved seats included.

Tickets for the Christmas trains can be purchased from ticket offices and railway offices at all stations in the country, as well as online at  https://bileti.bdz.bg/.
