Bulgarian tobacco growers to block Makaza border checkpoint with Greece

Tobacco producers from the Bulgarian towns of Haskovo and Kurdzhali said that they would block the Makaza checkpoint at the Greek border from 2pm on September 9.

Bulgarian National Television reported the tobacco producers as saying that they were mounting the protest because they had not been paid for the 2015 tobacco crop.

A factory in Sandanski, a southern Bulgarian town, had promised to pay the money by September 1 but had not done so.

They said that 200 tobacco producers from the two regions would take part in protest at Makaza and would block the road in such a way that finding an alternative route would be impossible, the report said.
