Biden: Bulgaria can be a factor for change in South Eastern Europe
Bulgaria can be a factor for change in the region of South Eastern Europe, United States vice president Joe Biden said at a meeting with Bulgarian President Rossen Plevneliev, according to a media statement on February 7 by the Bulgarian President’s office.
“The United States will continue to strongly support Bulgaria’s reform path and as a factor for stability in the entire region of South Eastern Europe,” Biden said, according to the President’s office.
Biden and Plevneliev held talks during the 51st Munich Security Conference.
Plevneliev and Biden agreed that the crisis in eastern Ukraine has the potential to destabilise the region of South Eastern Europe, the statement by the Bulgarian President’s office said.
This is why was dialogue is needed, as well as deepening of the ties between the countries in the Balkans to speed up the integration processes.
Plevneliev said that Bulgaria is an important factor in the region and that the country has achieved a lot in the past 25 years.
“Now we must continue to make history by building upon the democratic institutions,” he said.
Biden said that the US will continue to support every step that leads to stability and security which are important for US investors, the statement said.
The energy diversification and the construction of the gas interconnector between Bulgaria and Greece are of key significance for Bulgaria’s energy independence, it was emphasised during the meeting, the statement said.
