Turmoil in Ukraine brings ammunition to Hungary’s election campaign

Over the past few weeks, the political upheaval in Ukraine has directed Hungary’s attention toward Kyiv and increasingly toward the Crimean peninsula. Hungary is observing events very closely, given the common border shared by the two countries and the Hungarian minority of almost 150 000 in the Carpatho-Ukraine.

The Hungarian Foreign Ministry said Hungary considers itself obliged to respect “the territorial integrity and sovereignty” of Ukraine. The ministry emphasised that an escalation of the crisis and possible military clashes between Ukraine and Russia over the sovereignty of Crimea could only be avoided through peaceful negotiations. Hungary was thus ready to offer diplomatic help.
