News Analysis: What’s next for Europe’s left?

As France’s newly elected socialist President Francois Hollande settles into the Élysée Palace, bolstered by comfortable socialist majority in that country’s Parliament, center-left politicians throughout Central Europe are in high spirits that his victory heralds the left’s widespread return to power. Yet to truly capitalize on this swing in voter sentiments after years in opposition, social democratic parties must do much more than merely dust off their national agendas.

In an era when the national governments of European Union member states have long ceded political and economic power to supranational institutions, Europe’s center-left faces serious existential challenges.
