Dossier Commission: Four vice-presidential candidates in Bulgaria’s autumn elections worked for communist-era secret services
Four of the candidates for vice president in Bulgaria’s autumn 2026 elections of a head of state worked for communist-era secret services, according to an October 13 report by the Dossier Commission.
The four, all nominated by initiative committees, are Valentin Asenov Hristov, Lenin Velinov Stanoev, Nako Raynov Stefanov and Slavcho Georgiev Velkov.
No presidential candidate was identified as having worked for State Security.
In Bulgaria’s autumn presidential elections, there are 27 tickets – in all 54 presidential or vice-presidential candidates.
Prime Minister Roumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria ruling party has tabled legislation to shut down the Dossier Commission, the body charged by statute to disclose who in various walks of public life worked for State Security or the Bulgarian People’s Army military intelligence. The commission’s tasks and archive are to be transferred to a body subordinate to the State Archives Agency.
