It’s the real America, with corn fields reaching all the way to the horizon. A young man, accompanied by his father and carrying a small bag, walks up to an intersection of two roads, in the middle of nowhere, waiting for a Greyhound bus. The young man was the character Claude Hooper Bukowski, played by none other than John Savage in the film adaption of the Broadway musical “Hair” by Milos Forman, which hit screens all over the globe in 1979.

An American soldier is being held by Vietnamese gangsters, in a rat-infested cage installed in a river, which is full of water. The young U.S. army member constantly needs to hold his mouth and nose up in the little air he has, in order to be able to breathe. A few meters away, the gangsters bet in a game of Russian Roulette, in which American POWs are the victims. The soldier in the water is being played by John Savage as well, in the epic anti-war drama “The Deer Hunter”, which was released in 1978.

Savage, who is 68 years old by now, started his career on Broadway. He received an award for his role in the theater version of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. After moving to Hollywood, John Savage became part of many excellent feature films, including “Salvador” (1986) and “The Godfather III” (1990). Savage has played over 200 characters, in front of the camera and on stage.

It gets better: John Savage will be coming to Sofia for the Sofia International Film Festival. The brilliant actor will be presenting “The Return” by director Predrag Jaksic.

But there is even more reason for excitement: On Saturday, March 11th, 2017, John Savage will be presenting screenings of both “The Deer Hunter” and “Hair”, in Sofia. Later that day, Savage will be at the Cinema House for an interview during an event which will be open to the public.

British actor Rupert Everett is expected at the Sofia Film Fest as well. The event starts on March 9th and ends on March 31st, 2016.
