For Human Rights: “Women’s March on Washington” in Sofia

In Washington D.C., at least tens of thousands of women are expected to take part in the Women’s March on Washington today. A day after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, the participants will demonstrate for human rights, women’s rights, dignity and justice. The organizers say that “the rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us”. They are convinced the Women’s March “will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights.”

In many U.S. cities, women have joined in the past days, in order to walk towards Washington D.C., for the big march, or in order to go there by other means of transport, in order to show support and solidarity.

Also in Europe, women have organized events in support of the Women’s March on Washington, including in Sofia. The organizers of the event in the Bulgarian capital are expats and Bulgarian women. Their goal is to be “standing in solidarity with what may be the biggest protest in American history.”

The solidarity event for the Women’s March in Washington in Sofia will start today, on Saturday, January 21st, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. on the steps of Sofia University at Boulevard Czar Osvoboditel 15. The production of signs already started days ago. One says “Women are the wall. Trump will pay”. Another one says “Grab them by the pussy hat”, in reference to a so-called locker room quote by President Trump, before he was in office. The sign also features a drawn hat which has features of a cat. Another sign said “We will not accept racism, homophobia, bigotry, sexism, xenophobia”.

Demonstrations for women’s rights, minority rights and human rights in general are rare in Sofia.
