German Government: Continuation of Transatlantic Cooperation with Trump

Germany intends to keep the transatlantic partnership intact, in cooperation with president elect Donald J. Trump. Volker Kauder (photo), head of the parlamentary group of chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party CDU, suggested on German TV, the campaigner Trump might have sounded differently, compared to future president Trump. In case the next president intended to implement some of the more problematic foreign policies he announced during the campaign, Germany might have to react accordingly, Kauder said. But “we will have to cooperate as well as possible, with President Trump as well.”

Ursula von der Leyen, Germany’s Minister of Defence, said she was shocked when she saw “what direction the election took”. She stated that even though the election campaign was dominated by divisive language, “it was a democratic election and we will have to deal with reality.”

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier just said that things would not become easier. He hoped there would not be tensions, regarding international policies. “We do not know how Trump will govern America. We will seek communication.”

The chairman of the German Green Party, Cem Özdemir, said he was shocked as well. He said, Germany “can forget any cooperation regarding climate protection and ecology for the next four years.”

Most Germans were hoping for a victory of the candidate for the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton. This included the bigger part of the German government, which consists of a grand coalition between the CDU, its more conservative Bavarian equivalent CSU, and the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD).
