New Offer at German University: Study Bulgarian

Written by on November 8, 2016 in Culture, Europe - No comments

Studying German philology at Sofia University or some other faculty in Bulgaria is popular and conventional. Lots of students have picked that language in the past and present, lots of them will in future. Germany is a popular destination for Bulgarians willing to work abroad.

Also, several Bulgarian high schools are offering intensive German classes starting in 8th grade, for kids who intend to study and work in one of the three German-speaking countries. Everyone has either heard of or visited those schools.

This is very different the other way around. Yes, there have been offers German at community colleges, “Bulgarian for Beginners”. But, e.g. in Bremen, those classes were usually cancelled, when too few people registered, if anyone at all.

But the interest seems to be increasing. Even universities in Germany decided to stop ignoring the Bulgarian language. The University of Regensburg (Bavaria) is now offering Bulgarian, starting now. The programme “Bulgaria Compact” is basically a package deal. It gives students a Bulgarian language course, applied geography related to Bulgaria and knowledge about Bulgarian culture.

And yes, a visit to Bulgaria is an optional part of the deal. Here, participants can take part in summer school activities and check out some sightseeing sites.

The state of Bavaria is supporting the programme.
