City Walks: 5 Things You Can Encounter in Sofia, Bulgaria

Taking walks through Sofia, the capital of an Eastern European country which listens to the name Bulgaria, can be surprising. There are photo opportunities all over the place. You want proof for this thesis? Here we go:

5. German technology of the 1970-s, on a tram: In Sofia, trams need to be very stable, since most tracks are bent and shaky. They endure a lot. This tram is definitely shaken, not stirred.

4. A shrine for a star. Walking past the square in front of the Ivan Vasov Theater, you might have an encounter of the fourth kind, by running into this shrine for the late Michael Jackson. Where did that come from? Around 20 pictures of him were fixed to some kind of a pillar, with Scotch tape.

3. At Mall of Sofia, creepy pumpkins are scaring the hell out of people who are trying to concentrate on their shopping sprees.

2. At the “Pete Kucheta” intersection, this elderly lady sells flowers almost every day. The extremely low pensions (approx. 100 Euro) force seniors to come up with other sources of income.

1. In front of “Hotel Balkan”, the former Sheraton, the city of Sofia got rid of a parking lot. That is because archaeologists suspected something. They were right. Only one to two meters under the surface, they found walls of houses used thousands of years ago.

To be continued.
