Tourists in Romania: American Couple Hits Storm of Indignation After Complaining too Much

Written by on September 3, 2016 in Europe, Miscellaneous - 2 Comments

Audrey and Harry from Chicago are “travel video bloggers” (or “vloggers”), meaning they travel, blog about their trips and provide videos. They recently came to Bulgaria and did like the Black Sea beaches. In Romania, they were impressed by Corvin Castle. So far, so good.

The problem: They posted a video, in which they complained about the Romanian railway system, “smelly” passengers and a bad accommodation in the town of Cluj. They went too far, according to thousands of Romanians, who harshly attacked the American couple on the internet.

By now, Romanian media, including Yahoo Romania, are working on the story. On their Facebook page, the two “vloggers” apologized for their negative comments, at first. Now, they are taking a different approach: “Apparently, Romanians take their smelly trains WAY TOO seriously. We’re trending in front of Selena Gomez on Yahoo (Romania) RIGHT NOW!”, they wrote on Facebook.

Well, as they know, there is no such thing as bad press. That faux pas in Romania might not have gotten them likes, but definitely attention. Besides: Judging from what we have seen on Bulgarian railway tracks, maybe they were not so wrong about Romanian ones. Smelly passengers? They could have encountered those in Michigan too, but they found them in Romania. So what?

Here is some more attention for Audrey and Harry, the “Budget Savvy Travelers“.

Technically, we never apologized for our comments. We apologized about complaining. Big difference.
