Brexit worries: UK citizens inquiring about other citizenships

Since British voters decided to leave the European Union, a large number of British expats have inquired about citizenship for the countries they live or want to live. According to Bloomberg, the Austrian embassy in England now receives 100 inquiries of this kind per day. At the Swedish embassy, the number of questions regarding citizenship of that country has increased to seven times the usual number.

The Bloomberg report  says that Bulgaria’s embassy was receiving those questions in record numbers as well. The main worries seem to be the status Britons will have in EU countries, as well as freedom of movement aspects.

Approximately 10 000 Britons live in Bulgaria. Some have expressed worries about their status in Bulgaria or other European countries they might move to. Brexit, should it happen at some point, will likely not affect British citizens residing outside the EU.
