Bulgarian Black Sea coast: British tourist dies in hospital

A 29-year old British citizen has died in a Bulgarian hospital, probably of blood poisoning.

Michael Doyle had come to Bulgaria on July 24, as a tourist, with a few friends. They spent their vacation in Slunchev Bryag. After a few days, Doyle experienced strong abdominal pains and was taken to a hospital. He underwent surgery six times. According to the Swindon Adviser daily, he had five hours of dialysis, since his kidneys were failing. His parents and a friend were by his side, when he died.

Doyle’s family had started a crowdfunding campaign at the end of July, in order to get him home on a medical flight, which would have cost up to 40 000 euro. His medical insurance did not cover flights.

The Doyle family said they were devastated. Even the Bulgarian doctor had cried when Doyle died.

The funds collected in the crowdfunding effort will now be used to transport Doyle’s body back to England.
