Foreign Tourists: Bulgaria Outperforms Romania by More than 3:1

Bulgaria has outperformed Romania by a large margin, what the number of foreign tourists is concerned. It is not the first time.

The National Statistics Institute in Bucharest released a statement, saying 1.09 million tourists from abroad had visited the country from January through June of 2016. Bulgarians do not make it into the top three nationalities registered among foreign tourists in Romania, even though their country is located just next door. Most tourists in Romania came from Germany, Italy and Israel.

Bulgaria, on the other hand, has welcomed almost two million foreign tourists during the first five months (5, not 6) of 2016, according to the Ministry of Tourism in Sofia. In addition, recent reports have said revenues for the tourism industry along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast reached record highs. Sales have exceeded one billion (British: milliard) Leva in the past month.

According to Thomas Cook, one of the largest tour operators on the continent, British tourists prefer coming to Bulgaria, rather than to countries such as Turkey or Egypt, which are considered less safe.

Another neighbouring country, Greece, is expecting far more tourists this year, than Bulgaria and Romania combined. According to Greek authorities, the country will be welcoming almost five million tourists this year, in Athens alone. The total number of foreign tourists in all of Greece for 2015 amounted to 23.5 million, which is a record number. This year will probably turn out to be similar.
