Airport personnel strike: All flights between Sofia and Berlin cancelled

Due to a strike by the ground personnel at both Berlin airports, almost all flights to and from Berlin have been cancelled. This applies to all airlines.

The cancellations include all direct flights between Berlin and Sofia as well. Those are being offered by Bulgaria Air and Ryanair.

According to Berlin Airport, the operator of both Tegel Airport and Schönefeld Airport in Berlin, a total of 642 outgoing flights were cancelled. The strike is scheduled to last until early Wednesday morning. Therefore, the situation will probably not change until then.

The union “Ver.di” had called for an initial strike on Friday. As a result, hundreds of flights had to be cancelled then.

At this time, “Ver.di” officials are negotiating labour contracts for ground personnel with several airports in Germany. The union insists on an increase of 1 Euro per hour for employees with 12-month contracts. At this stage, airport workers, who are responsible for check-ins, luggage loading and other tasks, receive an average of approximately 11 Euro per hour.

The employers have rejected that demand, saying the best they could do was to spend 8 percent more, in a step-by-step plan over three years. The union rejected that offer.
