Anyone who has starred in 53 theater plays and 25 motion pictures would be looking back at an excellent acting career. If you are an actress with that kind of biography, if you just celebrated your 95th birthday and if you are still standing on theater stages almost every night, then your name is Stoyana Mutafova.
She will be receiving the Sofia Award at the Sofia International Film Festival, for her contribution to the acting profession.
Born in 1922, Stoyana Mutafova loved acting from a very early age. But her father, who was actually a playwright at the Ivan Vazov National Theater in Sofia, insisted she should become an archaeologist. But young Stoyana did not feel like removing dirt from stones using spoons. So, she entered the State Theater School at the same National Theatre anyway. Since her acting talent became obvious immediately, her father could finally be convinced.
Stoyana Mutafova is an official applicant for the Guinness Book, as the actress with the longest active professional career on the face of the Earth. In 1956, she starred in a motion picture for the first time. It was entitled “Tochka Parva”. Her latest camera project was the TV series “Sofia Residents in Excess”, from 2011 until 2016. And she has been on stage several times this week, 95 years after she was born.
The living legend believes in love. First of all, there is her love for the theater and for acting. But love outside the theater also inspires her: “Love is a great thing. It’s an impulse. I’ve played my best roles when I was in love”, she says.
They call her “Mrs. Natural Disaster” or “The Hurricane Stoyana”, because she has more energy than others, who might be 60 years younger.
At the “Temple of Laughter” in Sofia, long queues developed in front of the ticket office in 1956, when Stoyana Mutafova played legendary characters, next to her colleagues, most of whom have passed away a long time ago. And this week, 61 years later, she continued impressing her audiences.
Congrats to a true legend, for a prize well deserved.
The Sofia Film Fest starts on March 9th and ends on the 31st. Countless killer flicks will be screened, both new and classic. This includes “Best Picture” Oscar winner “Moonlight”. Some of the motion pictures will be presented by famous actors from abroad, such as John Savage and Rupert Everett.
