Summer Season: Bulgaria is 5th Most Popular Tourist Destination

Western European tourists are booking their summer vacation trips as we speak. According to the large tour operators, this is the most important time for booking vacations. They even say, vacationers who want good offers, should book now or within the next few weeks. Since hundreds of thousands of booking were already made, one of the largest tour operators, Thomas Cook, already compiled a comprehensive favourites list, based on the number of bookings:

1. The Balearic Islands

Brits and Germans, but also other Europeans, love Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formantera. There is probably nothing Bulgaria can do to overtake those Spanish islands, their truly wonderful beaches and high quality accommodations. They are winning yet again, in 2017.

2. Greece

Well, beating the beauty of Chalkidiki beaches, Greek islands or villages is pretty hard. Even Bulgarians, who can afford it, go to Greece instead of visiting beaches in their own country. That says a lot.

3. The Canary Islands

Yes, Spain has countless nice islands. Los españoles tienen las islas mas bonitas en Europa.

4. Turkey

Tourists do not seem to have a long-term memory or even a mid-term one. After the latest Islamist terror attacks, the number of foreign tourists in Turkey plummeted towards zero. Today, seven and a half months after 45 people were killed at Istanbul airport, in only one of 21 terrorist attacks in Turkey in 2016, things are different. The tourists are returning this year, invading the beaches of Antalya.

5. Bulgaria

Finally! Here we are. Yes, we are the fifth most popular destination, at least for Thomas Cook customers.

Not only Thomas Cook, but other tour operators as well, are praising Bulgaria as an affordable family destination: “A lot of vacation for little money”. Sounds intriguing. Maybe the new slogan should be this one: “Can’t afford Tenerife? Come to Bulgaria.” Seriously: Thomas Cook and Neckermann do cherish Bulgaria so much, they are offering stays at a total of 15 hotels exclusively. Plus they own two brand new “Sentido” hotels in this country.

Bulgaria’s caretaker government is expecting 9 million foreign tourists this year. We will see whether they are right.

On other continents, Thomas Cook customers are mainly booking the Dominican Republic, the U.S., Cuba and Mexico. Ay, que bien!
