Sofia’s National Library: Roof Collapse Might Lead to Closure

The National Library in Sofia urgently needs a costly roof renovation. This became clear after more parts of the building’s roof collapsed under the weight of snow and meltwater. The library’s staff tried to cover the new holes in the roof without success.

Bulgaria’s Minister of Culture in the new caretaker government, Rashko Mladenov, a well known actor and director, promised to provide the funds necessary to renovate the roof, according to Bulgarian language media reports. A price tag of more than 200,000 Leva was expected.

In the meantime, the director of the National Library, Professor Krassimira Alexandrova told Darik Radio, she hoped the library did not have to be closed. But she said she could not risk the lives of her staff and visitors, hinting that a temporary closure might occur if the roof keeps on falling apart. So far, only sections of the library have been closed.

On Friday, a visitor at the National Library’s periodicals section sustained head injuries, when part of the ceiling fell on his head. The incident was triggered by the collapse of part of the roof.

Sofia’s National Library houses the National Archive as well. The building it is located in, a Sofia landmark, was built from 1940 to 1953.
