The Trakiya Motorway from Sofia to Bourgas is open throughout, Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency said in the late afternoon on December 31, after the road was closed in the Bourgas area because of heavy snowfall, strong wind and damaged heavy vehicles that blocked traffic.

Bypass routes were also open, the agency said, reminding that winter conditions prevailed on the roads.

Hundreds of people were stranded in cars during the night on the motorway after a chain collision blocked Trakiya Motorway near Karnobat.

The Rish and Aitos passes were open, the road agency said.

The Interior Ministry urged motorists to drive at reduced speed and with caution, and to obey instructions from traffic police deployed in areas where there were traffic bottlenecks.

The ministry said that after the chain collision, at 6.30pm on December 30, an Interior Ministry crisis staff meeting had been called, which had deployed rescue teams with equipment including tracked vehicles, tractors and snowploughs.

About 250 people had been evacuated, provided with food and hot drinks, and accommodated in suitable places in locations near the motorway, according to the ministry.
