For the first time, police will put up solid barricades in central Sofia on New Year’s Eve as part of anti-terrorist measures.

The barricades are intended to prevent a repeat of the use of a lorry in a terrorist attack, as happened in Nice and in Berlin.

On Sofia’s Alexander Battenberg Square, site of the traditional New Year’s Eve concert, there will be 10 police checkpoints, metal fences and heavy security equipment.

Police vehicles will block the roads leading to the square, and stopping and parking vehicles will be forbidden in the central part of the city. Restrictions begin to take effect on December 28 and will be at their fullest on December 31.

Sofia police said that anyone appearing suspicious would be searched. Plainclothes police will be on duty. Dangerous objects will be confiscated.

People with large bags and packages will not be admitted to the square, Sofia police said.
