A nice-looking sign saying “The German Christmas Market” in German welcomes visitors who enter it from the north. But, even without that sign, anyone will identify this event as what it is. The unique atmosphere of German Christmas markets was transported to Sofia, and it has been here for several years now. The Bulgarian public, but also expats living in Bulgaria, do like what they find there. Visitor numbers are high, especially during weekends.
In little wooden huts, located around the central Christmas tree, they are offering potential Christmas presents, such as Children’s books, handcrafts or candles, but also Christmas decorations. Even more importantly, there is Glühwein, that red, hot wine Germans have during those freezing winter evenings, and there is a lot to eat.
