The motorway between Romania’s capital Bucharest and the Black Sea resort of Constanta looked like a battlefield on Saturday morning, after 29 vehicles crashed into each other in thick fog. Three people lost their lives. More than 60 had to be taken to several hospitals with injuries.

The 29 vehicles included a large truck and two minibuses. Video footage viewed by FF Magazine looked shocking.

The Romanian authorities activated a so-called Red Emergency Plan and sent several ambulances to the scene of the accident. Helicopters could not be used because of the fog.

According to witnesses, the crash happened after a driver left a gas station and tried to get back into the moving traffic on the motorway. Due to the fog, another driver did not see him on time and crashed into his vehicle.

Because of excessive speeds many were travelling at, in spite of the fog, more and more vehicles crashed into the cars already involved in the chain-reaction collision. Drivers involved said, it had all happened in seconds.

Injured victims were given first aid at the scene, before being taken to hospitals. This included children as well.
