Charity Concert on October 1st: Weird Story Around Event in Sofia

Some two months ago, this website, foreignersandfriends.com, was a few days old. Back then, we uploaded a short post about a charity concert in Sofia we had read about, which was supposed to include Johnny Depp and Mick Jagger. Some three days later, we deleted the story, since there were some weird aspects. None of the gigs announced were confirmed on the artist’s websites, and the regular Bulgarian press was mentioning rumors surrounding the event.

On Thursday, Jivko Botev, the organizer linked to the “Peace for You Peace for Me” Foundation, actually confirmed the rumors, according to which Mick Jagger and others are actually not coming to Sofia, for a huge charity concert, as lots of people had already suspected. He said he was cheated by a promoter.

The charity event was supposed to take place at Stadion Vassil Levski, but they moved it to the so-called “Park Sofia Airport”, behind Terminal 2.

In spite of those changes and corrections, we have not run out of weird aspects connected to this charity concert. First of all, on their website, the organizers fail to explain how exactly the funds collected with the charity gig (if any), will be spent or invested. This is what it says: “The concert is (aimed) at helping children who fled war and armed violence and will be broadcast in over 50 countries on five continents”. The visitors of that site are also being asked to donate, but it remains unclear what projects or organizations will be funded.

Another weird aspect: There are lots of artists, who are supposed to be coming. Among them Sir Bob Geldof. But, on Geldof’s site, there is no mention of this event, as of right now (September 9th, 2016, 22:20 hrs.). It also says Nina Hagen will be coming, a legendary German Punk-Rock artist. As of right now, nothing on the internet seems to be confirming her participation.

Vocalist Philip Bailey has been a member of Earth, Wind & Fire, the most brilliant band ever, for decades. He also released quite a few solo albums and he had a big hit in cooperation with Phil Collins, “Easy Lover”, a long time ago. Philip Bailey does have a nice website, with a tour calendar. You already guessed it: There is nothing about this event, as of right now.

There is one good sign, though. At eventim Bulgaria, they are selling tickets for the charity festival, at prices from 100 to 1,000 (yes, one thousand) Leva.

This is a chaos. Confusion, big changes, a lack of information on important aspects, and a newly organized charity show, with hardly any time to prepare, to sell tickets, or for promotion. We will see what this leads to.
