Update October 16th, 2016: Watch our special video report on the A380 landing at Sofia Airport.

There is a premiere of a special kind. It will neither happen on a theater stage, nor on the big screen at a cinema, but at Sofia Airport. The biggest passenger plane ever, an Airbus A380, will land on the airport’s only runway on October 16th, 2016, at about noon.

This is a special flight operated by one of the few owners of the A380, Lufthansa. The German airline operates a huge Lufthansa Technik service hangar in Sofia and offers several flights to German destinations per day.

Lufthansa’s Country Manager for Bulgaria, Alexander Tolweth, said: “With the flying visit of our flagship aircraft we want to promote our long-haul flights with the A380 to our customers in Bulgaria”. Tolweth also stated: “Bulgaria and Lufthansa share a strong history over many years. The event is the perfect opportunity to introduce our A380 to customers and the general public in this country. Bulgarians who plan to travel via our hub in Frankfurt to the US cities Los Angeles, San Francisco or Miami as well as to the Asian metropolises Delhi, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore can enjoy flying on board our A380 in one of our four modern travel classes.”

The A380 will only stay for a few hours. According to Lufthansa, some politicians, Lufthansa passengers, airline personnel and media representatives will be able to enter the aircraft, in order to survey it. The event will be organized by Lufthansa Technik and Sofia Airport.

Mario Bakalov, the only Bulgarian A380 pilot employed by the German airline, will most likely be the one who will fly the Jumbo to his home town of Sofia.

According to Lufthansa, the huge metal bird will be visible from various spots in Sofia, before it touches down.

In theory, the A380 can accommodate 800 passengers. Most owners, including Lufthansa, chose set-ups, including First Class, Business Class and ample leg room for Economy travellers, which allow up to 509 passengers.
