A total of 467 people have died in road accidents so far in 2016, according to a summary by the Interior Ministry issued on September 7, the close of the first of two four-day long weekends in September.
So far in 2016, there have been 5042 road accidents reported in Bulgaria, 120 of them in September.
Eleven people have died so far in September in car accidents and 175 have been injured.
In August, peak summer holiday season in Bulgaria, there were 728 road accidents, leaving 69 people dead and 961 injured, 48 critically.
Intense traffic, with the attendant risk on the roads, is likely again on Bulgaria’s four-day weekend that starts with the Independence Day public holiday on September 22 and ends on September 25.
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry announced that a week of child road safety was being held from September 5 to 11, part of the customary annual campaign to promote the safety of children in the month that the new school year starts in Bulgaria.
