Helsinki Committee: Bulgarian Police are Robbing Refugees

Written by on August 20, 2016 in Bulgaria, Politics - No comments

The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee has accused the Bulgarian Border Police, and other police forces in the country, of robbing incoming refugees. The Chairman of the Sofia-based NGO, Krassimir Kanev, told Magazine79 in an interview, pawn shops in southern Bulgaria were selling those phones. According to him, police officers also steal money from refugees.

Kanev also criticized the Bulgarian government, for an attitude which lead to ill-treatment and the abuse of refugees in the country. According to Kanev, the latest, harsh criticism of Bulgaria, voiced by U.N. High Commissioner Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein, is justified. Al-Hussein had recently said in New York City, Bulgaria’s government supported intolerance.

Magazine79 has now published the interview with Krassimir Kanev.
