Tomato Politics: Bulgarian Government Asked to Defend the Pink Kind

The war is on. The European Commission is actually discussing a ban on the Pink Tomato (picture: similar vegetables), which is wide-spread in Bulgaria. According to Bulgarian media reports, on bTV and elsewhere, especially small Bulgarian tomato growers would be in trouble, if any ban of this kind would pass. So would consumers.

Bulgaria is a tomato paradise. In the United States or Western Europe, tomatoes are not tomatoes. Just looking at them, in supermarkets, will make them fall apart, in many cases. Their taste is rather modest. In Bulgaria, on the other hand, especially the Pink Tomato will convince anyone consuming a fresh Shopska Salad. These vegetables are extremely firm and their taste is simply unbeatable.

The Institute of Plants and Genetic Resources has now appealed to the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture to fight for this national product, it says on http://epicenter.bg.
