Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster, is reporting on the latest chapter in the ongoing refugee crisis, from the perspective of Bulgaria. In its latest report on Deutsche Welle Online it says, Bulgaria feared a large wave of refugees. Since the western Balkans route had been closed, more and more refugees were trying to cross borders into Bulgaria, the network states accurately.

According to DW, the Bulgarian government wants to avoid a larger influx and is therefore preparing the installation of more fences along the borders. In the article it says, the inhabitants of Rezovo, in southeastern Bulgaria, were worried about the possibility of refugees crossing from Turkey by boat.

Indeed, Europe is asking itself whether the attempted coup in Ankara will lead to a cancellation of the so-called refugee deal with Turkey. Especially neighbouring Bulgaria fears the Turks might just open their northern border for all refugees.

The recent increase in the number of refugees entering Bulgaria has led to hectic diplomatic contacts between Sofia and the western neighbour Serbia. Also, more Frontex personnel is heading to Bulgaria in order to assist the country in securing the borders.
