Respected international travel guide Lonely Planet has listed Bulgaria’s south-western mountains area as among the best places to travel in October 2016.
“Start in Plovdiv, the ancient city on seven hills that’s packed with art galleries, bohemian cafes and impressive 19th-century architecture, and offers an engrossing stroll through history,” Lonely Planet said in a note on its website.
From there, Lonely Planet advised travellers, a journey could proceed onwards to Rila Monastery – founded in the 10th century, apparently by the hermit St John of Rila – and then on to Melnik, famed for its National Revival architecture and its place as an important centre of wine production, and to the narrow-gauge railway linking the mountain resort town of Bansko and the town of Septemvri.
Lonely Planet‘s other recommendations for October 2016 included the longest river raft race in Peru, festivals in Cork, Ireland and in New Orleans, and the Hindu festival of Dussehra in India.
