Guiseppe Verdi’s opera Don Carlo, with Italian bass Carlo Colombara, is to be staged by the Sofia Opera and Ballet on May 31 at 7pm.

The opera (otherwise known as Don Carlos, but customarily referred to as Don Carlo when performed in Italian) is based on the play by Friedrich Schiller. The libretto was written by Joseph Méry (1798-1866) and Camille du Locle (1832-1903).

At five acts, the opera is Verdi’s longest. At Verdi’s request, at the very beginning a scene was added to make the progress of the action clearer.
