The Bulgarian Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach opened its 2013 summer season on June 8 with a big concert and fireworks, Bulgarian National Television reported.

Hoteliers and tour operators expected a five per cent increase in visitors this year.

The resort currently can accommodate 350 000 tourists, a huge increase since its opening 55 years ago when it had 2500 beds, the report said.

Apart from tourists from traditional source countries such as Russia, Germany and the United Kingdom, the resort already has a strong presence of holidaymakers from Portugal, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Sunny Beach Company chief executive Zlatko Dimitrov said that, according to information from Bourgas Airport, the request for charter flights was up this year by 3.4 per cent.
